Victron HUB 2
What is the direct effect of this?
The direct effect of installing a Victron Energy HUB 2 home energy storage and self-consumption system will be in the form of savings on your electricity bill. The added bonus of installing a Victron HUB 2 System is that in the event of a power outage the PV Grid Inverter and the Inverter Charger will remain operational. This happens because the PV Grid Inverter is connected to the output of the inverter charger which simulates grid presence during a power outage. The drawback of this system is that the Inverter Charger must be sized on a 1:1 Ratio as the PV Grid Inverter or PV Array, whichever is smaller. This can mean higher installation costs.
Imagine the average home in the UK, man and wife are out at work all day and children are at school. Power consuming loads will be at a minimum during the daytime when the sun is shining and your rooftop solar panels are generating electricity. So with your Standard Grid Tied PV System you have generated several kilowatt hours during the day and sent them back to the grid. Now when you come home in the evening and turn on the television, oven and computer etc. you will be drawing power back from the grid, at a cost.
When installing a Victron HUB 2 Storage System, you have the option of 4 policies Available. (1) Disconnect at Night, (2) Invert Priority, (3) Connect to AC when Available, (4) Connect to AC Input When Available – Keep batteries charged. Each of these policies have their own specific uses. The most common policy is “Disconnect at Night”. This policy allows battery charging from the excess PV Energy during the day and uses it to power loads at night.
The Victron Energy HUB 2 Home Energy Storage / Self-Consumption System will store all the excess energy generated during the day and make it available for you to use when you need it, at night.
As mentioned above in the event of a power cut the Victron HUB 2 Home Energy Storage System will disconnect from the grid and switch to a standalone system. Keeping your appliances up and running and your solar panels producing energy.
The Victron HUB 2 Systems also has “Winter Mode”, this is achieved by connecting a standard toggle switch to one of the AUX Inputs of the inverter charger. Winter Mode will switch the system to keep the batteries charged from either solar energy or AC whichever is available. The purpose of this mode is to temporarily (during winter) set the system as a backup system rather than a self-consumption system. This switch also prevents batteries from remaining discharged for long periods of time during winter when there is very little solar energy available.
Generator Start / Stop function, the Victron HUB 2 System can also be configured to automatically start and stop a backup generator based on battery level or load level.
A Victron HUB 2 System is well suited to applications where the household has a little energy consumption during the day (nobody at home) where all excess energy will be stored within the battery for usage at night. The system will be more efficient when used with a larger battery bank as this will allow for more energy storage, to be used at night. The Victron HUB 2 System also has the added bonus of switching to a standalone system during a power cut (UPS Function).
